Internships and Residency

During your time in Medical school, one will typically do something called an Internship. This will help you become prepared for when you Graduate and go into the next step of your life.

Internships:
· A system of on-the-job training
· Exchange their labor to gain experience in a particular field
· Internship may be paid, unpaid or partially paid
· They usually last 6–12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the company
· May be Part time or Full time (typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer)
· Some interns also find permanent, paid employment with the companies in which they interned
This is one step that cannot be overlooked; it will lead you on to find connections and the biggest part is that it will help you in gaining that experience that is crucial.
The next steps after you do your Internships and complete Medical School is to get into a Residency program that fits what you are looking for. In here is the opportunity to work with other Doctors and Staff. This is the step where you are actually getting to learn and become the Doctor that you want to be.

Residency:
· A stage of graduate medical training
· Have received a medical degree and who practices medicine under the supervision of fully licensed physician usually in a hospital or clinic
· A residency may follow the internship year or include the internship year as the first year of residency (depending on where you go)
· Medical residency gives in-depth training within a specific branch of medicine
· It is the opportunity to find out what you are really interested in doing and may further provide you with the chance to go into a sub-specialty of your choosing if it interests you
There are many steps along the path to finally doing what you want in the medical field and this is probably one of the biggest as well as most important. It will give you the in depth looks at actual jobs and the training for them.
